involvement of Iago, the truth is that Iago was a manipulative man who played on the weaknesses of others. In essence, he used the love of Othello, the love that
Othello had for Desdemona, in order to destroy him. In the following paper we examine the character of Iago. Iago The character of Iago begins the play by insisting
that we know he is something other than he appears to those around him, stating to Roderigo, "I am not what I am" (Shakespeare I i). We see how Iago
is a liar, and how he admits he is clearly a liar. We have only to watch and see who he deceives and how. Interestingly enough, everyone around
Iago knows that he has lied to others, yet they do not seem to understand that he is lying to them as well. For example, Roderigo knows full well that
Iago has deceived Othello and Othello knows that Iago has lied to Cassio, but no on seems to believe that Iago would lie to them. As the reader, or viewer,
however, we see his private talks with himself and we know he lies to everyone. Because we know who the other characters are, and we know what they do when
Iago and others are not around, we know that Iago is a liar. Our first true indication of how Iago plans to use Othellos love against him is seen
at the end of Act I, where Iago tells us of his plans to wreak havoc in the life of Othello: "I hate the Moor:...He holds me well; The better
shall my purpose work on him" (Shakespeare I iii). We then see how he will involve others, such as Cassio: "Cassios a proper man: let me see now:/ To get
