system which is used to accesses it becomes out dated. The problem only arises when the company update to a new system, the old, or legacy system, then has to
be dealt with in order to make this information accessible and able to be manipulated (Manes, 1995). The legacy system is the old system, and the legacy problem is
the problem of making use of the information within that system (Manes, 1995). The problem is not new, it has been recognised for many years, and for this reason
special programmes have been developed to help legacy and new applications talk to each other, and it is also the reason there is a growing industry in data mining, data
mining is where data in systems is recovered in order to be used such as in an ERP system. 1(b). How does it relate to ERP? When
looking at the impact of legacy problems on ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) the first stage is to define what it meant by ERP. ERP is a set of tools, which
are often modular units of a software application which bring together the management of different aspects of the business. This can include divisions such as human resources, finance and accounts,
production planning, purchasing, inventory control and even communications between departments and suppliers or customers. It is software that help link the organisational functions together. To operate there will often
