There is a commonly used process in by companies in determining strategy, this will include identifying the goals or vision, which may also include reference to the visions statement, and then looking at where the company currently is and what needs to be undertaken to attain the goals (Anonymous, 2004). This can be broken down into a number of stages or steps which will be planed as a logical progression (Anonymous, 2004). The IT project may be a single part of that strategy, but in planning the project different goals may be identified. However, these should be aligned with the company strategy which means the entire process of planning needs to be integrated. This can be achieved with the development of the IT project, the planners should first look at the company strategy and then the aims of the specific project to make sure that they are aligned. This does not mean that there have to be the same goals, the IT project may be a small part of that, or may appear to be totally unrelated to the overall strategy, but in the way it is undertaken it should not conflict, and may also help to achieve the goals. The way the project is planned and undertaken will need consider other projects the interaction and the suitability of the project results in terms of the future plans. For example, ensuring that the IT project can cope with projected changes. The key is understanding the current and future goals and the main strategy to ensure alignment can take place.
