organizations are finding themselves up against not just national competition, but global competition. There are a variety of tools to help an organization build quality programs and processes. One of
the better-known tools to build such processes is from the International Organization for Standardization and its ISO 9000. What, exactly, is ISO
9000? The better question would be what ARE the ISO 9000 standards? According to the IOS website, the ISO 9000 "family of standards" is an international consensus of, and reaction
for, quality management practices (ISO 9000 Essentials, 2011). By following quality requirements, and implementing those requirements into a specific organization, the organization ends up being better able to satisfy its
customers, while continually improving its processes (ISO 9000 Essentials, 2011). The standards require an organization to self-audit, to determine what might not be working in terms of quality, and to
improve on that. ISO does this by focusing on everything in an organization from records and documentation control, to management responsibility, to methods of corrective action.
Many companies have benefitted from using ISO 9000. One study conducted in the late 1990s on small businesses in Ireland that focused on ISO 9000 certification saw
definite increases in productivity and customer satisfaction (Denby, 2008). Furthermore, a 2003 study evaluating the link between ISO 9000 certification and benefits to shareholders of public companies showed that companies
achieving ISO 9000 certification enjoyed higher stock price growth and valuation (Denby, 2008). When relying on ISO, its important that employees remain in
