novels, each one depicting an ever-broadening commitment to the feminist movement. Her novels, Of Love and Shadows, Paula, and My Invented Country, all chronicle this developing ideology. One has to
consider that very tumultuous circumstances formed much of Isabel Allendes life. History and culture also play a significant influence on her writing. In her earliest writings, Of Love and Shadows,
for example, one can see that she is still struggling with the exile that she has faced and the loss of her homeland. Also most evident in this work is
the emerging feminist threads which are woven through it. OF LOVE AND SHADOWS This novel is about the abuses which did occur and are still occurring in those countries
whose rulers are dictators. She equates the loss of human rights to those of women who had no formal rights to lose in the first place. All of her work,
in fact, embraces the elements of feminism, magical realism, and a surreal quality that sends the message of encouragement wherever there is a loss of hope. It is not surprising,
then that Of Love and Shadows takes place in a Latin American country that is suffering under a brutal dictatorship. Irene Beltran, who is a wealthy, but na?ve journalist, and
