about the impending situation between the United States and Iraq. Regardless of nationality, most are divided on the issues. Is the war with Iraq justified? If so, how? And if it is justifiable, what will the United States and the world gain from it? War. Despite the ramblings of countless authors, when reduced to its innermost components, war means that people die, families are destroyed. Given that war is hell on Earth, is it ever justifiable? According to many of the worlds greatest philosophers, the answer is yes, there is such a thing as a just war. Morality in Practice by James P. Sterba, addresses the question of justification and the just war in section thirteen of his book. Firstly, it should be said that a country should have just cause. Meaning that a just war is not started or initiated by a need to acquire more land or to fight over possession of perceived value, but rather is a decision that is based on some principle such as self defense or an initial defensive action to prevent an attack. War may also be said to be just when it is in protection of those who are not able to protect themselves or have become weakened in their own just cause war. According to Sterba, there are three criteria that constitute a just war. "There must be substantial aggression, nonbelligerent correctives must be either hopeless or too costly, and last, belligerent correctives must not be too hopeless or costly" (Sterba 2000, pg 567). Given this first initial criteria, then, it can be said that War with Iraq meets this expectation.
