out, made it seem as though smoking was cool, especially to the younger generation. Thanks to some multi-million-dollar lawsuits, not only is Joe Camel gone, so are a lot of
other colorful and provocative ads. Advertising for products that are unhealthy or questionable, such as smoking, beer - and since the late
1990s, pharmaceuticals - invariably brings up the question as to whether advertising is unethical. The contention of this paper is that advertising isnt necessarily unethical, but its up to the
buyer to beware when viewing an ad. But what, exactly, is advertising ethics? This is defined as "what is right or good
in the conduct of the advertising function" (Drumwright and Murphy, 2009). But ever since the first creative writer penned his first lyrical marketing phrase, there have been questions as to
the veracity of what is being sold. If people think advertising is deceitful today, they should have lived during the gilded age of the late 19th century, during which all
kinds of quack remedies were on the market, promising everything from whiter teeth (radium) to a calming elixir for stress (Coca-Cola, believe it or not, back in the day in
which there were minute quantities of cocaine). During the late 19th century, there was perhaps an excuse for moral outrage; consumers were simply not very well educated, and with science
