wars. In this paper, the similarities and differences between the Iraq and Vietnam Wars will be compared and contrasted. Though the media and others tend to compare the Iraqi war
to that fought in Vietnam, there are many differences. The areas on which well focus are reasons for going to war, locations and terrain, outcomes and acceptance of the wars
in the United States. I. The rational for going to both wars were very different from one another. A. The reason for the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War was to help
the South Vietnamese fight off the communist North Vietnamese. The U.S., at the time, was highly committed to the Marshal Plan, which mandated containment of communism wherever it might threaten
a free society. It was felt that if communism was contained at the source, it couldnt hurt developing nations or even the U.S. B. The U.S. invasion of Iraq involved various
"stated" and "underlying" reasons. The main "underlying" reason was to protect oil reserves. The "stated" reason was to rid the country of brutal dictator Saddam Hussein. It was believed that
if Saddam could be removed and a democratic form of government be put in place, Iraq could lead the way toward a peaceful Middle East; one that wasnt any threat
to the United States. II. The location and terrain were vastly different from one another, requiring different strategic maneuvers. However, U.S. forces in Iraq and Vietnam had to deal with "stealth"
attacks that werent expected. A. In Vietnam, U.S. forces were consistently beset by attacks from the guerilla-like Viet Cong, who managed to carry out stealth operations against the U.S. military. Furthermore,
the terrain of Southeast Asia was difficult, consisting of almost impassable jungles and paths in many cases. B. U.S. forces in Iraq had different problems to worry about from their Vietnam
