of, and desire toward, this new device, which would effectively combine the iPod and cell phone in one, while offering some other neat capabilities. Certainly there were critics on the
sidelines who sniffed that few people needed such a device. But no one could deny the outrageous success of the iPhones launch.
During that 2007 launch, Apple sold 270,000 devices during the first 30 hours, and eight million total the rest of the year (Tschenering and Mathiassen, 2010). The original iPhone was
then made available in five other countries: the UK, Germany, France, Ireland and Austria; while others bought the device from the "official" markets and started using them in their own
home countries (Tschenering and Mathiassen, 2010). It was estimated that, during this period, one million iPhones were adapted to networks other than AT&T (Tschenering and Mathiassen, 2010). The result was
that one year after Jobs held up a prototype of the iPhone at the January 2007 Macworld convention, the share of Apple stock more than doubled from the year before
(Mickalowski et al, 2008). But the iPhone ended up being more than a cool device that allowed a user to listen to
music, make phone calls and surf the Net (not to mention being able to download a ton of applications to play games, text people and so on). In many cases,
