be an overgrown iPhone on steroids, while others wondered how a "tablet" could take the place of a laptop computer. Still others were reminded that the iPads creator, Apple Inc.,
had tried the tablet device before - the Newton came out during the early 1990s and failed dismally. Apparently consumers didnt listen to
skeptics - during its first four months, the iPad reached 51 billion sales; the fastest for a consumer gadget (WDCore Editorial, 2011).
Since that auspicious release, the iPad has been through two versions with the most recent, the iPad 3, coming on the market just this past spring. As can be expected,
the iPad 3 garnered its usual share of publicity and has enjoyed its usual popularity, despite the fact is has competition from other tablet manufacturers. As a "first mover" in
the marketplace, the iPad has been able to garner some good market share, even given the price of the device. The fact that people are willing to shell out upwards
of $700 for this device speaks volumes. The question we ask here, however, is whether society really needs a tablet device. The answer, apparently, is yes it does - especially
given the competitors that are now coming onto the market with one. iPad - An Overview Visually, the iPad isnt all that remarkable
- its a flat device, with a single button. It comes in two colors - black and white (compare this to the multicolored iPods that are available to the general
