be a good investment. After examining a variety of sectors, I settled on the long-term care facilities sector. Within that sector, I selected the Canadian-based company Amica Mature Lifestyles Inc.,
which traces under ACCKF on NASDAQ. Amica Mature Lifestyle designs, develops, markets and manages upscale retirement living facilities in Canada (Mackenzie, 2012). The
company operates more than two dozen Wellness & Vitality Residences-branded condo communities, many with assisted living arrangements (Mackenzie, 2012). The target market is affluent senior citizens, with, right now, the
major residences located in major metropolitan areas including Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver (Mackenzie, 2012). Even better is that Amicas plan is to continue its Canadian expansion - with its dedication
to urban areas (Mackenzie, 2012). But the real proof of the pudding here is Amicas financials. Its revenue growth, of course, is very
strong - revenue for 2011 stood at $70 million with a gross profit of approximately $32 million (after deducting cost of revenue), a nice increase from its early days of
$45 million (Amica Mature Livestyles, 2012). But there is additional compelling financial information - for one thing, operating expenses are not horribly out of line nor are they wildly fluctuation
- at this point, total operating expenses are $23 million, leaving an operating income of approximately $12 million and net income of $9 million (Amica Mature Lifestyles, 2012). Dividend yield
compared to the industry is average (Amica Mature Lifestyles, 2012). Return on equity is pretty strong at around 12.2% -- though return on invested capital took a bit of a
beating between 2008-2010, its rebounding nicely (Amica Mature Lifestyles, 2012). The debt-to-equity ratio at 1.4 is pretty good (the most recent quarter); this might be considered a little high, but
