would offer these items under one roof. The first Kudler store opened in La Jolla in 1998. A second store opened in Del Mar two years later. In 2003, the
third store, in Encitas, opened. A major challenge faced by any retail store is that of inventory management and, related to
that, purchasing activities. Kudler has a purchasing manager, but no real purchasing department in any of the three stores. Each of the stores managers determines their requirements and places the
orders directly with suppliers through a standard purchasing order form - its up to these managers to find the right price, quality and to ensure that goods are received undamaged.
Kathy Kudler also places purchase orders, mainly related to specific or unique products. But there are likely problems with this decentralized
purchasing approach, one of which is an inventory imbalance. In this scenario, one store has too much of one product that another store might need. Due to lack of collaboration
(other than a hurried phone call, if theres time), what happens is that the store missing an item orders it. Meanwhile, the store with the item ends up having to
mark it down. Its true that these two individuals could be in touch with one another regarding inventory. But in any managers day, he or she likely doesnt have a
