and go hiking into the Alaska wilderness? The friends and loved ones of Christopher McCandless asked that question when the young man was discovered dead in a bus in the
woods of Alaska, the victim of starvation and hypothermia. McCandless was found in late 1992 -- and a year later, author Jon
Krakauer wrote a lengthy article about the incident entitled "Death of an Innocent" for Outisde magazine. Some years later, the article morphed into a full-length book, Into the Wild, which
detailed the journey of McCandless (who renamed himself "Alex Supertramp) from his diary, letters and two notes found at his camp site. With the help of McCandless family, Krakauer traced
the young mans renunciation of his wealth and privilege and his journey toward death. Krakauers work first appeared in Outside magazine in
the early 1990s, with the book an extended version of the compelling tale. Throughout the book, Krakauer does an excellent job in journalism, reporting just the facts, while letting the
story itself shock and amaze, rather than adding his own editorial comments or feelings to it. He allows the quotes at the beginning of each chapter to set the tone
and mood of the chapter -- and through others, is able to bring together the portrait of a young man who met his end on the other side of the
country, far from the area and atmosphere of his birth and childhood. Interestingly enough, through McCandless odyssey, the author finds himself on his own emotional journey, tying his own life
