In this paper, a young Hindu bride from India has been interviewed as she defends her belief system against those in the West who accuse her religion/culture of being oppressive
to women. Natalia Vikulina was married to her husband only three months ago. Women are required to marry whoever is chosen for them. She has little say in the
matter. In many cases, if she attempts to argue or refuses to marry the one chosen for her, she is stoned to death by her own family. Physical abuse
is condoned and supported in the Hindu faith. When this fact was mentioned to Natalia she was quick to defend her cultures way of choosing mates. And in the past
year, there had been a law passed which stated that if a bride dies within the first year of marriage that the husband is considered guilty. She says that the
husband in Hinduism has a divine obligation to respect the position of his wife in his life and family. And, as such, the wife also must see the divine aspect
in her husband and aid him in achieving his duties and responsibilities. Natalia says, "Because we see a union of a man and woman as a spiritual nature,
and not just a biological one, most Hindu marriages are intact and healthy whereas in the West, marriages are in serious trouble." When I pointed out that Hindu women
