it must be submitted that this passage is more than its mere five lines would suggest, and in fact, gives the human race a glimpse of the nature of God.
Whom better to explain the human condition than the One who made them? This paper will endeavor to explain Exodus 34:6-7 in its inherent context of 32-34. When one
specifically reads 34:6-7, as some are want to do, then an incomplete picture emerges and as such the Nature of God is only partly revealed. Those who are not well
versed in the Bible or who have no background in the Christian faith have interpreted the passage as an edict from an unjust and uncaring Deity, whose only purpose is
to frighten his creations into worshipping Him and following His rules. However, taken in its entire context within the setting of the previous chapters, a clearer picture emerges. GENRE
The specific genre of this particular passage, by itself, would seem to be that of Kerygma, or a proclamation by God. This is a Biblical revelation of God as the
father, son and spirit to the Jewish people. This is evident in the use of the active verbs He does not leave, and he punishes. In addition, taken in
the whole context of chapters thirty two through thirty-four, this section is a complete literary segment in its own right. The section tells of the proclamation of God to His
people of the laws under which they are to govern themselves, but it also speaks to more than just the physical governance; it speaks to the spiritual governance as well.
