rigged. The only way the world outside of Iran knew about the protests was through the Internet. Then, when the Internet was blocked, protesters and activists turned to Twitter to
let the outside world know what was going on (Santana, 2009). Though the Iranian censors were able to shut down Facebook and other sites, they had problems with Twitter (Santana,
2009). Through Twitter, the world was able to learn how the elections were likely rigged, that there was no way Ahmadinejad could have won the presidency as decisively as he
had, as he only had a narrow margin over opponent Mir Hossein Mousavi. The world also saw the horrifying wreckage of the protests aftermath - clashes between demonstrators and police
and of course, the death of Neda Agha Soltan, which made its way around the world on YouTube, Facebook and blots. The Internet, it seemed, demonstrated a country angry with
the supposed rigging of the election and the unfairness of the battles in the streets as better-equipped police beat up on unprotected protestors. Thanks to the Internet, the world received
the impression of an Iran ready to rise up and overthrow the government. But was that the reality?
Experts have pointed out that in Iran, as in other developing countries, Internet usage is high amount the young affluent people who primarily live in
cities (Santana, 2009). As a result, its likely that Twitter and other Internet tools are used mostly by young, liberal voters - which could likely be ignoring the opinions of
