is required to conduct an assessment of geographic, social-cultural, political and legal factors that create either opportunities or constraints for businesses wishing to expand abroad.
After selecting about five countries for potential locations, the student will then apply the Simple Multiple-Attribute Rating Technique, or SMART, to narrow down the field. Once
the SMART model has vetted the countries, its time to narrow the choice down to two or three that would be ideal candidates for the ventures new location. By the
end of this paper, the student will have a pretty good idea as to where he/she will expand to. PART A - ASSESSING FORCES
As has been mentioned in other papers of this type and the business literature, there is a lot more to opening a business in a foreign country
than simply deciding to go in and set up shop. The student has been asked to identify various factors - geographic, economic, social, cultural, political, and legal, that provide either
challenges or opportunities for a new venture in a foreign country. The student can point out that the challenge for this
type of thing can depend on the country being studied. For example, in Abu Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, setting up shop is a relatively simple process, involving only
a little paperwork. This is because the UAE likes foreign investment, actively encourages it and believes that too much red tape might scare off some investors.
