expected that sometimes communication issues can crop up from time to time. The wise manager tries to intercept such issues, but may not always be successful. If not caught in
time, however, such communication issues can get blown beyond proportion and end up hurting the morale of the entire company. The following is an example of a fictitious scenario, but
one that is common in the workplace. As part of a management exchange program, Widget Company in the United States was swapping
managers with a similar company in Japan, Natutsu Corp. The idea was that three or four Japanese managers would come to the United States to learn about the environment here,
while Widget would send its own executives overseas. Laretta Garing, a secretary to one of the executives, was looking forward to
working with her new boss, Hidecki Oto. She had e-mailed him on a couple of occasions, and was impressed with his mastery of the English language and his apparent sense
of humor. Things went well during the first week or so. She felt comfortable with the new boss, calling him by
his first name as she did with her old boss, and asking him about his family and his experiences in the U.S. She also told him how things worked at
Widget Company, what her duties were, and how she had worked with her old boss. But then she noticed that Oto was
