During the past several decades, however, technology has brought a definite impact into the arts world and its creators. Interactive media is having an impact on development of the fine arts, while focusing on commercial uses as well. While once technology and interactive media was considered the main province of computer experts, more and more artists are using the technology to create new and compelling works of interactive art. Interactive media, however, is still in a state of transition. Definition of interactive media Basically, the true definition of the term "interactive media" for many is simply another phrase for "multi-media," "new media," "digital media" and other similar names that combine technology with the fine arts (Seligmann, 2001; see also Aikman, 1996). For purposes of this paper, the technology is referred to as "interactive media." If the variety of descriptive media wasnt enough to confuse the concept, when interactive media became an actual concept is also confusing. Some experts in the field of technology have varying theories as to when, exactly, the interactive media concept began (Seligmann, 2001). Some experts believe that this concept is fairly recent, beginning with the Internet explosion during the mid-1990s and the introduction of the CD-ROM during the early 1990s (Seligmann, 2001). Other sources trace todays artistic interest in interactive multi-media back to the laser disks of the late 1970s, and even as far back as the 1960s, when multi-media performance art and rock concert light shows were so popular (Seligmann, 2001).
