plagued human beings for centuries: diabetes. Until his discovery of insulin and its function in the body, a diagnosis of Diabetes was pretty much a death sentence. The key discovery
was the function of insulin as a hormone of nutrient storage. What they discovered was that insulin is indeed a hormone and as such is also a protein.
Insulin, most experts agree, is secreted by groups of cells located inside the pancreas called islet cells(Bliss, 1984). Basically, what happens is that carbohydrates (sugars) are absorbed from the intestines
and released into the blood stream. Insulin is stimulated into production by the pancreas as a reaction to the blood sugar level. This insulin acts much like a key, turning
on the individual cells and unlocking the door to allow nutrition to enter the body of the cell. Therefore, insulin can be said to be the key to nutrient storage
in each individual cell. This serves to remove the excess sugar from the bloodstream and allow those levels to return to normal. Consider what happens if one doesnt have
a naturally functioning system in which insulin binds to the receptors and turns on the cells. In effect, the cell starves to death. A person could literally be eating tons
of food and be in a state of starvation. The food does little good if the cells cant access the calories in the glucose. This is exactly why someone with
diabetes (type 1) will go into a coma without insulin shots. However, according to most reports, rather than a deficiency of insulin, most peoples cells develop a type of resistance
to the insulin. In other words the key doesnt work anymore. In yet another analogy, one could consider the cellular system to work much like a small
