In one example, the iPod, which has taken over the digital music industry by storm, was actually Apple Inc.s solution to the issue of how people could access its iTunes - most of the portable mp3s at the time were bulky, couldnt hold much music and were of poor quality. To compare todays iPhone, which can hold thousands of songs and a ton of applications, to the first-generation shuffle which held, at max, 100 songs only, is an interesting lesson in how technology and innovation go hand-in-hand. A technology life cycle starts out when the new technology is introduced to the market. In those early days (or years), the innovators and technology enthusiasts are the only ones to try it; then come early adapters and visionaries (Norman, 1998). In his book "The Invisible Computer," author David Norman discusses this specific phenomenon in his own experiences with the personal computer. During the early days of the PC, when Apple came out with its Apple II, an accountant with the Department of Psychology at the University of California/San Diego bought the Apple II in the early 1970s, despite the fact it seemed to be what Norman considered a "giant step backward" because information was stored on an audio cassette tape, the system had a poor keyboard, was slow, and had a low-resolution screen (Norman (b), 1998). In comparison to the huge mainframes with which Norman was familiar, the Apple II was a primitive machine (Norman (b), 1998). The accountant liked it, however, because of the Visicalc, the spreadsheet that would ultimately make her life easier (Norman (b), 1998).
