time following the Revolutionary War. These people were the ones who inherited the legacy of democracy and were responsible for creating and supporting a brand new society. The independence
of the new nation and the acquiring of it made a tremendous impact on the people who lived through it and after it. This independence made an enormous impact on
nearly every facet, especially the economy. This, then, seems to be the theme of the book, that those who lived immediately after the Revolutionary War felt a great burden to
make something of the nation, to make it great. This was a remarkable burden for people to have internalized. A good example of this can be seen in how
they determined to organize their economy. The colonial economy had been organized around what Great Britain wanted, and there were all sorts of restrictions about what colonists could or couldnt
do with businesses. With independence, Americans could pioneer new trades. These began to include foreign trading as well. This laid the foundation for those with enough ingenuity to take advantage
of the untapped natural resources of a new country. In short order, inventions which could produce and create faster and more efficiently various products were invented. It was in this
climate of economic freedom that invention was allowed free reign. Joyce Appleby covers this wide arena of growth in other areas beside
economics. She shows how science, medicine, education and family all enjoyed boosts. For example, more than ever before more people were able to attend school. Printing and publishing industries took
off. Entrepreneurs were made. Appleby maintains and argues that this could never have occurred without the revolution from the British possession. Most of the normal hierarchies were torn down
