system would help boost revenue and productivity, but when it was implemented, had exactly the opposite effect. What, exactly, is the failure
of information systems? In brief, such a failure means that the systems are not meeting the goals and objectives they were initially designed to meet. Beyond this basic definition, there
are many reasons for such failures - and many solutions to help counteract such failure in the future. One question here is
how does information system failure manifest? The student can point out that according to experts, there are certain symptoms of system failures. These include but are not limited to
frequent requests for change by the users; a lack of understanding on the users parts of the system; tasks that are overlooked; insufficient communication and a poor definition of requirements
needed (McManus and Wood-Harper, 2003). Such experts believe that information system failures are not necessarily a problem of the organization, but rather, a problem of the people within that organization
(McManus and Wood-Harper, 2003). In these types of situations, the student can point out that the so-called Hybrid Manager can be quite
helpful. But what, exactly, is a Hybrid Manager? According to computer specialist Michael Earl, a Hybrid Manager is "A person with strong technical skills and adequate business knowledge or
vice versa .... hybrids are people with technical skills able to work in user areas doing a line job, but adept at developing and implementing IT application ideas" (Skyrme, 2002).
