correcting the damage they inflict. Macs, for instance, are not as susceptible, which leads one to wonder what the difference might be. Fully two-thirds of America relies heavily on computers
for entertainment, financial obligations and work related endeavors. Of those two-thirds, most of them employ some sort of Microsoft computer programming system. Unfortunately, the dark side of that shining star
called Microsoft is that it, alone, seems more vulnerable to attack than any other operating system out there. For the most part researchers are baffled, but there are some indications
as to what it might be which will eventually lead to some definitive answer as to why Microsoft seems to be the primary target for viruses and worms.
Paul Roberts reports for CERT said that "The buffer overrun vulnerability in the Workstation Service, a Windows component, is well suited to exploitation by an Internet worm
and would allow malicious hackers to remotely attack and compromise vulnerable systems"(Roberts, 2003). Of course, Microsoft is countering the problem by producing yet another patch for users. But, this has
left many owners and users of Microsoft products tired of patching the patches. This latest is a buffer overrun exploitation that hackers are utilized by virus writers. This comes on
by default in most of the newer versions of Windows, such as XP and 2000. Microsoft plans to issue a service pack to correct the problem.
Some of the better known viruses which have been assaulting, conintue to assault, or have caused damage in the past include the Peido0B virus better known as the Mothers
Day Virus. This virus is email borne and arrives masquerading as an administrative message. The email states in the subject header: THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY YOU DO
