However, in recent years, the business world has been turned around. Global competition means new ways are being invented so businesses can stay competitive. Global competition has also introduced a
need for flexibility when it comes to planning, whether those plans involve marketing strategy, employee management or strategic management. Strategic management, in
its most basic form, involves understanding what drives the business, and the contingencies and road maps the business should follow given certain internal and external environmental situations. For example, what
would happen in the event of a weak economy would involve the paths to keep the company strong (i.e., different employee management including layoffs, new product development, new methods of
marketing and so on). But given the global climate and the need to be more competitive, there have been various methods of
putting together strategic plans. In the past, strategic planning has involved an "if A, then B" type of mentality. However, more and more, the idea of informal theorizing is having
an impact on how strategic plans are developed and implemented. What is the contribution of informal theorizing to strategic management? To answer
this question and to understand the impact, it would be helpful to determine what it is. Though finding a specific definition about this topic is difficult, Bulmer (1999) comes closest
