the same conflicts which arise in the discussion about women and womens rights. To commit adultery in many Middle Eastern countries, if one is a woman, is to condemn oneself
to death, while, in comparison, if a woman has an affair in the West, nothing much is made of it (it is considered a private affair between families). It is
plain to see that infidelity is viewed from opposite ends of the spectrum. Technically, there is no explicit prohibition against premarital sex in the Quran, but the implication is
clear. Muslims are encouraged to marry at an early age, to dress modestly and to avoid sexual urges all together, including masturbation. Young Muslims are instructed to fast to control
the urges. In other words, there is no sex allowed before marriage. Extramarital affairs are viewed in an even worse light, especially if one is a woman. An article by
Time Magazine and reprinted in an article alled Honor Killings, states with startling aclarity the dim view that Middle Eastern men and society take toward promiscuity and extramarital affairs.
A man named, Sirhan, shot his sister to death because she had dishonored the family. She was raped. "She came to the house at 8:15," he relates, "and by
8:20 she was dead. She committed a mistake, even if it was against her will," says Sirhan. "Anyway, its better to have one person die than to have the whole
family die from shame." This is in stark contrast to the laws which protect women in the United States. In the United States if a woman or girl is
