retailing stocks tracked by "Supermarket News" performed in line with the Dow Jones Industrial Average while outperforming the S&P 500 Index. In addition to coming up with hard-and-fast statistics, the
author depended on analysts to flesh out his focus. So if that focus had to come down to one thing, it was this: Whole Foods - good. Safeway and Supervalu
- bad. This article is whats known as a "trend" piece - basically, the other makes a few comments based on factual information, then finds support for those comments from
experts in the field (in this case, the industry analysts). Is the author somewhat constrained by the fact that much of his information
was obtained from the "SN Composite Index" as opposed to other information? Well, in looking at Whole Foods, Hamstra and his sources
are justified in their praise of Whole Foods. Morningstar Research Centers analysts (who are pretty honest), were positively giddy about Whole Foods earning capacities, pointing out that quality of earnings
have increased, as has earnings per share. Also adding to the positive impact is that Whole Foods has a debt-free balance sheet "and the ability to self-fund new-store growth easily"
(Morningstar Equity Analysts, 2011). But unlike Hamstra, Morningstar analysts present a caution - namely that Whole Foods dominates because of a brand
image (which can be difficult to manage) and that "conventional grocery chains such as Safeway have remodeled stores at a rapid clip and attempted to narrow the gap with premium
