organization was not named in the assignment, well focus on incentive plans for Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines is a domestic passenger air carrier headquartered in Dallas, TX. The company employs
approximately 35,000 throughout the United States (Fact Sheet, 2011). More than 80% of these employees belong to some kind of union or another, which makes developing incentive plans somewhat interesting.
Meanwhile, the mission of Southwest Airlines (from the employee perspective) is to " . . . provide our Employees a
stable work environment with equal opportunity for learning and personal growth. Creativity and innovation are encouraged for improving the effectiveness of Southwest Airlines. Above all, Employees will be provided the
same concern, respect, and caring attitude within the organization that they are expected to share externally with every Southwest Customer" (Mission of Southwest Airlines, 1988).
How does this companys incentive program tie into its objectives for employees? Doyle (2008) in interviewing the authors of the book Contented Cows Move Faster, notes that
incentives should be geared toward employee engagement. As such, incentives are not a one-size-fits all scenario, but rather, a "one size fits one" philosophy (Doyle, 2008). Many companies throw money
at employees or offer a tangible reward at the end of a given year (typically some kind of catalogue from which employees can choose a crystal bowl or some other
expensive trinket). Southwests incentives are somewhat different, however. Because of its philosophy of hiring (hiring for attitude, training for skill), it places
a great deal of focus on keeping those employees around for awhile. One tool it uses to do so is that of retraining (Desrocher, 2007).
