Even when safeguards started being put into the plants, "environment" wasnt really a concept company owners cared about. Why should they? If employees were doing the job and meeting
their quotas, then it really didnt matter what they thought of their workplaces. There were some compassionate owners such as Henry Ford, who believed in compensating their employees above the
industry average. But these owners were few and far between; when Ford announced he was paying his employees more than the average wage (so they could afford to acquire the
Model Ts they were building), he ran into serious criticism from his fellow business owners. But during the mid-20th century, sociology began moving
into the workplace, as researchers and scientists proceeded to link job satisfaction with a positive workplace environment. We look at the research and findings of the time in some wonder;
it should be obvious to anyone that if a location or environment is conducive to work and a positive one, that more work will be accomplished. Yet its taken much
of the corporate world awhile to realize the connection between a workplace environment, job production and ultimately, the bottom line. Even these days, some companies havent figured it out. The
belief is that if the employees cant hack primitive conditions, low pay and a demanding environment, they dont need to be working there. They havent figured out that the best
