Mention the term "human resources" and what might come to mind are the people who conduct "screening" and "exit" interviews; who manage paperwork involved with hiring, promotions and layoffs and
who handle questions about benefits, salary or vacation days. This is probably the case in most firms - human resources is a mere department that is more or less sectioned
off from other departments. However, in some firms, human resources is a strategic partner when it comes to boosting that firms competitive advantage.
In such companies, human resources is more than the "personnel" department. Rather, this department follows factors of whats known as human resources management to increase both effectiveness and contribution of
employees. In doing so, HRM helps the organization attain its goals and objectives. But what, exactly, is human resources management? The HRM function
of any organization handles a variety of activities, ranging from determining staff needs and how to fill them, through training employees to ensure they are, and continue to be, high
performers (McNamara, 2010). Other HRM areas include handling performance issues, ensuring that the organizations actions are compliant with various rules and regulations and keeping track of personnel policies and records
