United States (particularly in the latter part of the 1800s and early 1900s) to be involved in areas such as imperialism, colonization and nation-building.
Interestingly enough, these are also countries that, these days, are bastions of capitalism and driven by market forces (with a little help from governments). The question we
ask here is, is there a link between the colonization/imperialistic tendencies of the 18th and 19th centuries and todays capitalism and future capitalism? Does the advent of imperialism and colonization
directly correlate with the growth and flourishing of capitalism? Most of the literature is in agreement that there is a definite link
between imperialism/colonization and capitalism, because one reason why countries go after other land (and attempt to take it over) is because of the markets in those countries. Chen (1997) also
points out that capitalism create colonialism throughout the world as well. European colonialism, for example, he points out, was partly the result
of the industrial revolution, as well as the revolution to expand capitalism to other parts of the world (Chen, 1997). Karl Marx, though embraced by the communists, interestingly enough, actually
"launched" capitalism through the working class, which was considered a "historical agent for change" (Chen, 1997, 81). As imperialism developed, so did colonialism, with the working class moving from the
home soil to foreign soil -- after all, with less expensive labor available, profits could be greater back home. One interesting product
that came about through a type of imperialism was the banana. When the United Fruit Company first imported bananas into the U.S., it did so by taking over various countries
