The VP and search committee agree that the first candidate ranked on a five-person list is the most qualified, with the second two candidates very close in qualifications and ability. However, candidate #1 mentioned he has a degenerative progressive condition that could result in a disability, either a few years down the road or 20 years down the road. Suddenly, things have changed. Management believes that this individual would be a financial risk if he becomes ill. There are several ethical considerations to take into account here. The first ethical consideration is to the candidate himself. Hes clearly qualified for the position. Even more importantly, he was upfront about his condition. If he isnt offered the job, it almost seems as if this individual is being punished for being candid. Along those lines, the second ethical consideration here is that not offering the position to this individual doesnt make the company look too good. It demonstrates that the company is more interested in following a "what-if" scenario, rather than hiring the most qualified individual for the job. But there is also the third consideration, namely, what is in the best interest of the shareholders and board. Is it better to hire the best candidate who MIGHT become ill in the mid-to-long term, if at all? This decision COULD mean financial issues down the road. Or is it better to go with a less-qualified individual, who nonetheless has a better chance of staying healthy? Shareholder fairness dictates the latter choice. What about legal considerations?
