Healthy organizations may be aligned with characteristics such as open communication, the provision of meaningful work, as well as the availability of a work and family balance (Yandrick, 1994). Another aspect of organizational culture goes to spirituality. While most companies are not in the business of promoting spiritual life, things seem to be changing. Today, there are some businesses that are secular but do focus on the creation of a workplace that fosters ethical values (Mitroff & Denton, 1999 as cited in Gockel, 2004). Spiritually driven firms aspire to the promotion of employee well being and are aligned with the provision of service to the community (Gockel, 2004). In fact, there are a number of firms that examine these values. One may call these firms "spiritual," but they are really secular enterprises that simply embrace ethical values. Examples abound. One firm that has been on the news lately is Google. It provides an array of provisions for its workers, such as massage on premises and a completely free cafeteria. These perks of course are basic and while not spiritual, attention to the well being of employees might fall under that camp. Attention to employee development and allowing personal aspects to merge with career may be deemed to be a part of this model. A firm can commit to accentuating the lives of employees and this can be a value in organizational culture that works. The attitude is key in such an overhaul. Leaders of the firm must respect its employees and allow them personal freedom within the cooperate structure. This requisites good leadership and authenticity.
