classroom...Now, both general and special educators are accountable for producing positive student outcomes" (Gable et al., 2000; 205). As would be imagined, the conditions involve learning disabilities, or LD. The
term can refer to many conditions experienced by a child, and yet the complexities of defining LD are numerous. The following paper examines IDEA 97 as it involves ADD/ADHD and
then discusses if and how IDEA 97 has affected speech language pathologists. IDEA 97 First and foremost it is perhaps important to illustrate that the definition of LD
is difficult and controversial in itself, and as such would clearly influence and affect conditions related to ADD/ADHD as well as speech language pathologists. One author notes the following in
relationship to the definition, or difficulty in defining: "The term means a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, spoken or
written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal
brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and development aphasia....The term does not include learning problems that are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor disabilities or mental retardation, of emotional disturbance, or
of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage" (Wilkinson et al., 2006; 129). From this description it seems clear that the term is confusing. For example, it is generally assumed that someone
