was speculation that System X, with its basis on the x86 servers, would be next, as this is the brand name associated with the servers (Staten, 2010). However, despite a period of stagnation where there were few innovations or development recent movement on the brand has reinforced IBMs commitment to the server market with increased levels of motivation, especially with the most recent 5th generation eX5 that have increased the level of innovation as well as functionally to a greater extent that seen in other generational developments (TBR, 2010). The market position of the servers may be seen as suitable for entry level, they have a large number of features and are designed to be highly user friendly (Chapman, 2009). The servers are based on industry wide standards, with the ability to be fully scalable, and complimenting other brands such as the IBM BladeCenter and IBM System x iDataPlex. The servers are positioned so that they will have the same basic architecture as they are developed into the future, even when the underlying technologies change and evolve; facilitating easy adaptation and adding or expansion of the servers to meet evolving business needs (Chapman, 2009). When looking at the market position, this can be further examined by looking at the potential target market. This includes small and medium sized enterprises, which have a need for servers, this may be as an upgrade or as an initial purchase (Sales Guide, 2008). The target market are likely to be demanding relatively powerful servers but need them at an affordable price, and also have other concerns such as minimising the maintenance budget as well as facing challenges and constraints as a result of limited internal technological expertise.
