1. Balance Sheet Analysis The balance sheet gives details of the capital structure of the company and how this is made up of assets and liabilities. IBM currently has a total of $120,4311 in assets; this is made up of $53,177 in current assets and $67,254 in capital assets. At first glance it appears that the largest asset class is the plant, rental machines and other property which is given as a value of $38,584. However, this is the value before depreciation, and although it is the largest gross value, the valuation placed on it is calculated using the matching concept. This means that the cost of the equipment is written off over a period of time to match with the revenues that it produces. After depreciation this value is $15,081, which is a value below some other asset classes. The largest single asset class is the capital asset of the prepaid pension assets.
