Douglas looks at the then popular program the X-Files and the fact that they repeatedly challenged the government, the honesty of national officials and the integrity of the CIA and FBI, to the enthusiastic reception of hundreds of thousands of viewers each week. The X-Files and advertisers, Douglas argues, are able to convey messages that significantly challenge national identity, ideology, political realities and even personal realities and they often go unchallenged by the masses. At the beginning of her article, Douglas confirms her role in the larger picture of mas media manipulations. She, in fact, is a journalist, who has the job and inclination to point out the manifestations of right wing ideologies present in the mass media. Challenged by a colleague, she explores the leftist or "subversive" messages of the X-Files in an effort to determine how this program could exist in the midst of such vehement opposition to challenges to national identity and order. In such a politically conservative period in American history, why would a program that challenges government, talks about everything from the ineptness or incompetents of government to government coverups, could be so popular with the masses. At the same time, Douglas recognizes that some of the elements of the show, some of the central themes, relate to historical perspectives that may not be either true or part of the common knowledge of the masses. Agent Mulder spews bits of American history as a means of supporting his divisive perspective, but some of its is based on a biassed view of history.
