to fail. Corporate history shows this has happened to dozens, if not hundreds, of companies, from Pan American Airlines to Wang Laboratories, which was best known for the release of
its word processors in the 1970s and 1980s. However, the market for such devices collapsed when the personal computer took over the functions of word processing.
Unlike Wang Laboratories, IBM (which, ironically enough, helped push the use of personal computers forward) has managed to remain flexible, and it does so by being
a true learning organization. To support this statement, it would be helpful to define, first of all, what a learning organization is.
To do that, well focus on Peter M. Senge, a well-respected engineer, sociologist and lecturer, who helped push forward the concept of the learning organization (Smith, 2001). Learning organizations, he
pointed out were those in which members "continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire" (Smith, 2001). Furthermore, he went on to say that learning organizations
liked different types of thoughts and ideas - out-of-the-box thinking - and are adaptable and flexible enough to succeed in environments of consistent and rapid change (Smith, 2001). All people
have the ability and capacity to learn, he explained, but what stood in the way were the rigid corporate structures in which they were forced to operate (Smith, 2001).
The learning organization, with its foundation of systems thinking, is the best model for a company that is in a fast-paced, forward-moving industry.
