approach involves how people interact, think, and believe in relationship to things around them. According to the student requesting this paper, "I/It means you are not looking at something as
a whole. It wants you to divide it into little parts. I/Thou means you are looking at things as a whole." With this in mind the following paper examines three
statements and discusses whether they are I/Thou or I/It in relationship to personal perspectives. NOTE: Questions (in quotations) are those offered by the student in this assignment. I/Thou
and I/It A. "A scholar argues that the novel is understood best by studying the writers biography, including his ethnicity and nationality, and
looking for parallels between the novel and the authors life story." While one could perhaps argue that this statement is an I/It because the scholar is looking at parts, rather
than the whole that is the book in itself, it is far more of an I/Thou statement. It is an I/Thou statement in light of the fact that the scholar
wants to know the whole, the life of the author and the work, in order to better understand the nature of the story and the author. On the other hand,
the statement indicates how the scholar also needs or wants this information because they wish to draw parallels between many elements, or parts, of the author and the book. It
could be argued that if the scholar simply wanted to combine the life of the author and their work to create a whole then they would be arguing an I/Thou
perspective. But because they are pointing at various elements, parts, such as nationality and ethnicity, this could be construed as an I/It statement. For the most part, however, it appears
