a final burst of brilliance before slipping behind the ancient stones in the distance. The fading rays splashed through the window of a nearby dwelling, washing both the room
and the man within with a soft golden glow. The beauty of the moment was lost on the man, however, for he was lost in the pages of the
book that lay open before him. Frowning deeply, the man turned to the next page of Rene Descartes Meditations and continued to read. Strewn across the face of
the desk that occupied one corner of the small room were pages of his own writing, pages that represented ideas that differed greatly from the ones pressed between the pages
of the book. The man had read the book many times over, but was convinced that no number of readings of Descartes words could ever produce a clear understanding,
much less an agreement. This man, a skeptic Scot named David Hume, knew that much more than a century of time separated his world from that of Rene Descartes.
Hume was a product of the progressive atmosphere that swirled outside the small window, the era of the Enlightenment, the age currently gaining momentum and moving toward great upheaval
and change. He did not perceive the world as having changed greatly, but instead perceived the same world in a much different light. As the hour grew late, his
eyes grew heavy. As the book slid unnoticed from one hand to the floor, he slid unnoticed from one state of awareness to the next. II. Ethereal Enlightenment
