of robots. In the film I, Robot the main robot character, Sonny, is a robot who has thoughts and emotions and who is essentially very much like a human. This
brings to light the possibility of robots who will develop and learn. If such is the case one must look ahead to the future to see if, and how, robots
should be treated in relationship to slavery and rights. The following paper argues that robots, if they are like the robot Sonny in I, Robot, should not be treated as
slaves but as people with rights. I, Robot and Race/Slavery In looking at this issue, which many may see as ridiculous,
one author notes: "Why...in the face of constant ridicule should we pursue such a topic. We believe that the development of robots and their emerging rights is a compelling issue
which will signficantly and dramatically impact not only the judicial and criminal justice system, but also the philosophical and political ideas that govern our societal institutions" (McNally; Inayatullah). As has
been learned, too late, in the past people who deserve rights are often neglected for far too long. As such to look ahead to the future possibilities concerning robotic technology
involves also looking ahead to the necessity of rights for future robots such as the robot in I, Robot. In the film
the audience is presented with Sonny, a robot who thinks and feels and develops. The main character, played by Will Smith, asks the woman who makes the robots more human,
