Expereinces For the most part the experiences of African Americans and European descendents are incredibly different, with different cultural foundations, different societies in many ways, and different histories in relationship
to the nation at large. As such their experiences can be incredibly and vastly different. This is important to understand and keep in mind in light of the fact that
Maya Angelou is an African American and her poem is, in the opinion of most if not all, a poem addressed to the African American struggle. Even if such is
not the case this paper will generally address the poem as though it is aimed at the African American people. In the experiences of blacks there has long been
the condition of oppression and restrictive realities. This is the symbolic premise of the poem. From this perspective the African American, entrapped within a cage and unable to seek their
dreams or freedom, is far more restricted than a white male school teacher could ever be in society. It can well be assumed that a white teacher, teaching African American
