likely suffered through in their adolescence years. The story relates the feelings and experiences of a fourteen year old Puerto Rican girl when she first begins to experience her
own sexuality. While in some ways the story is amusing, in others it is concerning. It illustrates the degree to which young people can become enslaved by hormonal
changes and allow those changes to adversely impact their lives. Written in the first person, Cofers story is apparently autobiographical. This is characteristic of her style (Faymonville 129).
This story tells of the time when the now mature and wordly author was much less mature and very vulnerable not just psychologically but also physically. Feeling somewhat inferior
because of being from Puerto Rico, she believes that she has found her true love. She has caught site of this handsome Italian boy in school and almost immediately
dedicates her life to secretly pursuing him. She believes her adoration is something that others do not notice but the truth is that many in her life are very
aware of the situation that is developing. Although Coffer does not directly confirm the fact, it had to have been apparent to her parents, her teachers, and her classmates
that something was diverting her attentions from her studies and even from her family and friends. That something, of course, was a boy a couple of years ahead of
her in school. She is attracted not just to his attractive features but even to the less positive personality traits that he has. When he slumps in class
she admires him. When he verges on beligerance to his teachers she practically applauds him. Obviously, Coffer is blind to truth. Her hormones have taken control not
