Dickinson lived, women were severely curtailed in what they were allowed to do in the public arena. Most of their identity, of necessity, would come from what they could discover
of themselves in the private realm. Dickinsons poem, I Dwell in Possibility, addresses this particular problem of women during the Victorian Era. Poetry became Dickinsons escape. Through it she
would be able to travel where she wanted, when she wanted, with whom she chose. In the world of the poet, of the creative mind, the walls were not closing
in, but ever expanding. This is evident in her first lines of the poem: "I dwell in Possibility/A fairer House than Prose
More numerous of Windows/Superior for Doors"(Dickinson). A fairer house than prose seems to suggest another avenue for her, than prose. She speaks to the use of poetry, with its
ability to cloak one thought in the symbolistic wrappings of language. During her time and age, prose written by women was severely edited and discredited. However, poetry was considered to
be suitable. What many did not realize was that with the keen intellect that she possessed, Dickinson managed to say more in her poetry than many were ever able to
say in their prose pieces. "Of Chambers as the Cedars/Impregnable of Eye And for an Everlasting Roof/The Gambrels of the Sky"(Dickinson).
In this poem, the word usage is very important. For example, the choice of the words chambers and "impregnable" paired with the word everlasting
seems to suggest that something, the space that has been created, is confining. Yet, she juxtaposes this imagery with the gambrels of the sky which would suggest that instead of
