is easy to see why there was confusion over this issue as Acts 15:29, which records an apostolic counsel expressing forbids the eating of meat offered to idols. Paul, first
of all, makes it clear that no food has any particular virtue--or vice--as the world is the Lords (I Cor. 8:8). Since the gods represented by idols do not exist,
there is no power present to defile food. "But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if do we do not eat, but no better
if we do" (I Cor. 8:7). To Paul, it is not the origin of the meat that is significant, but rather how it affects the consciousness of those who
eat it. He points out that for some recent converts, it is difficult for them to believe that pagan idols do not have any existence. He states that some who
eat this food, which has been dedicated to a pagan god, really believe that they are continuing to participate in the worship of an idol. This is the issue that
concerns Paul. It is because that eating meat sacrificed to a god might tempt someone with a weaker understanding of the Christian faith to sin that Paul states, "Therefore, if
what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meant again, so that I will not cause him to fall" (I Cor. 8:13). In
Galatians 2:11, Paul addresses this issue again. He speaks of specifically confronting Peter in Antioch because Peter "began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentile" (Gal. 2:11). In
