himself, a poor, black boy growing up in Brooklyn at the turn of the century. To be an American is many things. To Richard Skolnik, it was not at time
to count the costs, but to count the blessings. This book not only chronicles Skolniks life and times, but also gives a new perspective on what live was like at
the turn of the century for an African American. Racially, the black man was faring little better than he had before. Still, in the area of racial equality, change came
slowly. Segregation was the norm of the day and was passed into law by Woodrow Wilsons administration. This meant that men and women of color could not eat at the
same places as whites, or if they did, they were relegated to certain areas within the restaurant. This is why it was such a monumental event when Peter Boyles takes
Skolnik into the restaurant entering from the front, and why after being treated like any other customer in the place, Skolnik began to form the opinions that would shape the
rest of his outlook on life. Shortly after this event, he and his mother would move out of the rural South toward New York City where his mother had
relatives. It was the 1930s and change was in the air socially, politically, and internationally. Where they lived in Brooklyn Skolnik would come into contact with all sorts of immigrants.
His exposure to varying worldviews would also shape his opinion of people. The tenants in the apartment building where they lived soon became family, each looking out for the other.
However, when opportunity knocked, Skolniks mother answered. They moved to Harlem. Skolnik speaks of the first organizations for African Americans and that living in Harlem, in many respects, was like
