prepared to recognize or treat elderly clients for depression. It is a widespread misconception that depression is a natural part of aging (Birrer and Venuri, 2004). Research statistics indicate
that there are roughly five million Americans over the age of 65 who are clinically depressed and the incidence of depression takes a marked increase when only the elderly living
in long-term care facilities are considered (Birrer and Venuri, 2004). Furthermore, an additional 1 million elderly suffer from major depression. The risk factors for developing depression in late life
include "a history of depression, chronic medical illness, female sex, being single or divorced, brain disease, alcohol abuse, use of certain medications and stressful life events" (Birrer and Venuri, 2004,
p. 2375). Treating elder depression is frequently complicated by the fact that the elderly patients will frequently present for the treatment of other symptoms to their primary medical practitioners, complaining
of "insomnia, anorexia and fatigue," but fail to mention that they are also depressed (Birrer and Venuri, 2004, p. 2375). Relevance to Social Work Due to the fact that
depression in the elderly is under-treated, the suicide rate for the depressed elderly is double the rate for elderly individuals in the general population (Birrer and Venuri, 2004). White, elderly
