her cultural group has influenced her socialization and opportunities as a woman. Persuade her to share any experiences of prejudice, especially gender prejudice. My parents tended to demonize mainstream
white Americans. There was a definite feeling of "us" versus "them," with "us" being other Arabs. My parents would tell me, "If you go to an Americans house, theyre smoking,
drinking...But if you go to an Arab house, you dont see as much of that. Bi hafzu ala al banal [They watch over their daughters]" (Naber 87). They were very
concerned about preserving my virginity during adolescence. The message was clear-remain virginal until marriage and marry someone suitable, that is, another Arab, but also someone with money. I lived with
one foot in the Arab world of my parents and the other in the mainstream culture. I obsessed about keeping the two world separate. "I internalized hating being a
woman" and I would wake up in the middle of the night with boyfriend in a panic that my father would discover I was with a black man (Naber 87).
In college, I dated quite a lot and that is where my ethnicity blossomed. I was proud of being Arab. Rather than my ethnicity ostracizing me, my difference made
me seem exotic, at least to men (Naber 87). Of course, I also ran across misconceptions, as people think an Arab American woman has "to wear a veil and your
parents never let you do anything" (Naber 87). I did not encounter outright prejudice until after 9/11 and then not as much as one might think. Most people are
more intelligent than that. How did her being different shape her development and psychological adjustment? How has it affected her relationship with her parents, men, and other women? Mostly
