at this time, has no intention of changing jobs in the near future. Janet loves her work because she is able to help women break the cycle of abuse. The
reports to which Janet is exposed are far from being pleasant, they are tragic and it is easy to become emotionally involved, however, that involvement must always emphasize helping this
specific woman and her children to begin a new life. In fact, this relates directly to the traits any successful worker in a womens and childrens shelter must have -
the ability to distance themselves enough to get the job done. It has to do with empathic sensibility along with compassion but case managers must also have excellent organization skills
as well as a great deal of knowledge about domestic abuse, including the psychological factors that preclude women from leaving horrific situations. The necessary traits or characteristics of the workers,
particularly the case manager, are, in turn, related to the primary responsibilities of the manager. The case manager coordinates the comprehensive program for the client, including counseling, education and other
social activities. The case manager also provides direct counseling for the client and follows-through to monitor progress. These responsibilities require exceptional organization and communication skills. The organization is very much
like a project management situation wherein several resources are coordinating services. Keeping track and monitoring how all services are coordinated is the most difficult part of this job, especially when
outside resources are used. Janet commented there are numerous barriers their clients must overcome and sadly, some return to their abusive spouses. These hurt the entire staff because they
