not the adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse becomes an abuser and the independent variable is the abuse suffered in childhood. Rubin and Babbie (2001) make the relationship between
these variables quite clear. The dependent variable is assumed to "depend" on or be the effect of another factor, which is referred to as the "independent" variable (Rubin &
Babbie, 2001, p. G-2). For example, if you regard income as being directly affected by ones level of education then income, in this respect, is treated as a dependent variable
(Rubin & Babbie, 2001). A point that Rubin & Babbie emphasize in defining variables is that the relationship between factors is mutable according to perspective. For example, if one
regards religiosity as a function of gender, that is, that women are generally more religious than men, then gender viewed as a dependent variable that "depends" on the independent variable
of gender. On the other hand, religiosity might also be viewed as an independent variable as an explanatory factor in regards to criminality (Rubin and Babbie, 2001). A third
example offered by Rubin and Babbie concerns an hypothesis that proposes that clients are more satisfied when a written contract is employed to spell out an agreement. In this case,
